Thinking Styles
I have always had a fascination with thinking types and styles. I remember shopping at a used book sale and finding the book "The Art of Thinking" by Bramson and Harrison. To satiate my curiosity, I bought the book and took its test to discover which "style" I was. Turned out I was a Synthesist-Pragmatist mix, with Synthesist far outweighing any of the other styles. I read through the descriptions of the different styles and was relieved to learn that I could at least be classified somewhere! Most of my life, I have struggled to conform and felt the repercussions of failing to conform. It was nice to finally have a reason (the reason being that Synthesists are too far-out and people get frustrated by it).
The next exposure to thinking types was in my MBA program. We had to take the Keirsey temperament sorter test (forced to pay $15 for the extended version of the test). Turned out I was an ENTP. The descriptions of the ENTP were in congruence with the Synthesist/Pragmatist symptoms, so I figured it was an accurate diagnosis. In class we shared our types. Out of 14 students, three were Idealists, nine were Guardians and two of us were ENTP Rationals; we had no Artisans. We were then given paper and told to create a dream house with the others who shared our type. The Idealists and Guardians got to work drawing floor plans on their papers. Not wanting to do the assignment, my Rational friend and I rolled our eyes at each other. We then proceeded to fold and rip the paper, creating a 3D house. We held it together with a piece of old scotch tape picked off of an old notebook. My Rational friend penciled in a boat launch accessible via a trap door in the floor. With that, our work was finished. Though we felt a bit naughty, we had a great time blowing off the unspoken rules of conduct! The professor then proceeded to tell the entire class that it is quite natural for Rationals to break the rules.
My purpose in writing this post was to clarify who I am. People who have known me in the past have been frustrated trying to figure me out. This confusion can all be attributed to my being an ENTP woman. So, if anyone wants to end their frustration and finally "get" me, please read up on ENTPs or Synthesists. All the descriptions I have read have been right on the mark!
